Cook to Promote Health

In the quest to look for new practices to promote a Healthy Lifestyle, I stumbled upon one that was so simple I had overlooked it; Cooking. Cooking your own meals is perhaps the best way to know exactly what you are eating, and making sure that what is in your meal is good for you. It will benefit yourself as well as your family. I think most people know that, but there are always reasons Not to cook. So in this article, I aim to look at the reasons Why not to Cook, and how we can overcome them.

I don’t/can’t cook

With out a doubt, cooking can be a daunting task especially if your experience is limited to Ramen Noodles. But having said that, being able to cook is not that hard; the key is to start easy. Look on the internet for some recipes, or better yet, buy your self a few cookbooks, look through them, find some easy recipes for Pasta, Salads, etc. and start cooking. After you cook a few easier meals you will have more experience and familiarity with the kitchen so you can challenge your self and go for some harder ones.

I don’t have time to cook

Everybody is busy, that is true. It isn’t always easy to find time to cook. But you don’t have to always cook. Start off slow. Cook yourself dinner on the weekends when you have a bit of extra time. It is usually an easier option to cook lunch than dinner, so the weekend is a perfect time to get some practice under your belt. Also, if you want to cook yourself a meal, it doesn’t have to be a long process. There are plenty of meals that can be cooked in 10 minutes (again, look through some cookbooks).

I don’t want to cook

Sometimes the hardest reason to cook, is simply a lack of spark to get ourselves up and just do it. If you care about a healthy lifestyle, for yourself and family, you have to just start. Once you cook a few meals, it will not be so much of a task, or as difficult, and you might even enjoy yourself. Cooking can not only be great for everyday, but also for special occasions, for holidays, for romantic dinners, for parties, and any other reason you can think of.

I wouldn’t even know what to cook…

Again, buy some cook books. There are millions of cook books available for every type of food you can imagine; Healthy Cooking, Italian Food, Indian Food, Thai Food, Easy Cooking, Cooking with the Microwave, and almost anything else you can think of. Take a look at whats available and have fun with it.

General Health Tip

General Health Tip

In our everyday lives, there are little things we can do to maintain a good level of general health for ourselves and family. Obvious tips include a proper diet consisting of meals that are properly balance according to the food groups, adequate amounts of sleep, and lower stress. This article however is going to give information about 3 less popular, though highly effective ways to take care of our General Health.

1. Wear Slippers

Its not so much the wearing of slippers that will keep your immune system strong, but the not wearing of shoes inside of your house that will. Taking off shoes that are worn outside is a common practice in Asian Cultures, though rarely seen in Western Homes. Not only will this practice keep your house visibly cleaner, but it will also greatly minimize the amount of bacteria in your home that threatens your general health. Few would suggest that the streets and sidewalks outside are clean, and few would consider it sanitary to sit down in the streets and sidewalks outside. So why would our carpets and floors inside our house be clean if we walk over them with the same shoes that we wear walking in the streets and around outside. Leaving your outside shoes outside, and having a pair of slippers to wear inside is a good way to keep your house clean, and protect the general health of your family. This is especially true for those with young children.

2. Drink Water

Paying attention to what you and your family drinks throughout the day is a good way to stay healthy. You may find that a majority of what you drink is soda, coffee, energy drinks, and maybe juices. Soda, coffee, and energy drinks are okay in moderation, however the high levels of sugar and caffeine included are bad for your teeth and do a poor job at hydrating your body. In addition to a list of benefits to your health and digestive system, keeping your body fully hydrated is a good way of cleaning your body of toxins allowing you immune system to focus on fighting any sickness you may encounter. While juices are the healthiest of the group, they often contain high levels of sugar that create their own problems, and are not very good at quenching your thirst. A cup of coffee or two a day, or soda for lunch isn’t bad, just try to mix in a few glasses of water, tea, or a sugar free fruit juice.

3. Eat Fruit

Fruit is nature’s candy. It tastes great, contains loads of vitamins, and is easy to find, and easy to eat. In addition to this, eating fruit instead of other sugar filled candies will keep up your general health, keep your teeth strong, increase your digestion, and keep your weight down. There are a wide variety of fruits so that if you get tired of one, there are plenty of others to choose from. While eating fruit is good for adults who want to stay healthy or lose weight, getting your children in the practice of eating fruit for breakfast, after dinner, or as a snack is a great way to keep their health strong.

These are three easy practices to add to your healthy lifestyle that will greatly aide in maintaining a strong level of General Health for you and your family.

Its that time of year, the Natural Products Expo East is back again, and back in Baltimore. Their website says it best, “Natural Products Expo East isn’t just a trade show. It’s your chance to see, hear, smell, taste and get your hands on everything new in the natural, organic and healthy products industry. ”

If you have been there before then you know what its all about. If you have never seen the sites of the the Natural Products Expo, it truly is an experience. I have been fortunate enough to visit the show both in Baltimore, as well as the few years it was in Washington DC. Suppliers from all facets of Natural Products come to showcase their company, and new products.

It will be in Baltimore again this year, from September 27 - 29th, in the Baltimore Convention Center which is large, and will be packed with suppliers, buyer, brokers, retailers, and onlookers, each of which will be busy filling up their freebie bags with the endless rows of samples that will be given away. Some of the most memorable samples in the past, other than all of the food, would have to be the chewable tooth brushes, vitamin C gum, aura readers, and most of all free back massages (honestly, I am not sure what that company was selling).

For all who are going, Enjoy !! For those who do not yet have plans to be there, do what you can to change whatever plans you may have and get there, you will not be sorry.

Keep an eye out for the all natural food products company Health Is Wealth Products Inc. who will not only have their own new products to showcase, but will also have Sabaidi Tea bags to show to brokers, retailers, and all those who are interested in selling them. Unfortunately we were unable to get sufficient amounts of samples sent to the US for the show, but as we are preparing for Sabaidi Tea Bags to arrive in the US by the middle of October, we are beginning to introduce the our products. Remember, HEALTH IS WEALTH…You can go check them out and not only will you get some good food from Health is Wealth, but might also get Sabaidi Tea Samples.

Boosting Your Metabolism Naturally

Most know that basically our metabolism is our system of burning calories. The faster our metabolism, the fast we burn calories. The slower our metabolism is, the slower we burn calories. A slow burning of calories will cause unburned energy to turn into fat.

Whether you are trying to lose weight, or just maintain weight, keeping a balance on our calorie intake and energy use is a good idea. Since most of us end up eating more than we are burning, one could say as a general rule of thumb, that boosting your metabolism is a good idea.

Though some think our metabolism is written in our DNA, it isn’t. In fact there are a few tips that will help speed up your metabolism. Below are a list of the top natural methods of speeding up your metabolism:

Eat Breakfast

Give a jumpstart to your digestive system in the morning by eating breakfast right after you wake up. University of Massachusetts researchers found that skipping breakfast makes you 4.5 times more likely to be obese. And waiting longer than 90 minutes after waking to eat breakfast can increase your chances of obesity by nearly 50 percent. Eating a healthy breakfast is good for the whole family for a variety of reasons, in addition to giving their metabolism an early boost.

Move

Take a look at your daily schedule. If you find yourself stuck sitting down at a desk or in front of a computer or TV all day and/or night, take a guess how that affects metabolism; Keeps it burning slow. Periodically get up and move. Walk around, walk up/down the stair and back, get some tea, go to the bathroom, anywhere Just Move. A 5 minute walk break will help reduce your stress level, and potentially lower your blood pressure when continuously practiced. There are many benefits to walking.

Sauna/Steamroom

Most of the day, all year long, we find ourselves in a temperature controlled environment 99% percent of the time. The walk to and from the car may be the description of your outdoor activity. There is nothing wrong with that, especially when it is really hot or really cold out side, but the stagnant temperatures will help to make your metabolism stagnant. Using a sauna or steam room will help you to heat up your body, causing you to sweat, burning fat and calories. You will see a change in your body’s system by using a sauna a few times a month.

Eat spicy Food

Chili peppers have a variety of health benefits associated with them, and they make food taste great. One of the benefits of Chilis are they help you to digest your food and burn calories. As with anything, too much chili pepper will cause problems, but just enough will liven up the flavor of your food and help you to digest it quickly. This will in turn help your digestive system run smoothly and keep your metabolism fast.

Eat More

Well, not exactly more in quantity, but more frequently. Studies show that eating 5 smaller meals a day works better with our digestion and gives more of a boost to our metabolism than 3 larger meals. Making your lunch time meal the biggest will also allow you your most active time of the day to digest the meal. A big dinner so close to bed time is an easy way to let that food become a permanent member of your body.

Benefits of Walking

1 Star2 Stars3 Stars4 Stars5 Stars (2 votes, average: 5 out of 5)

Provided by: R. Adam Shore

More than 50% of all Americans are overweight or obese. These are conditions that contribute to the risks of chronic health conditions. These conditions include high blood pressure, diabetes and coronary heart disease. America’s increasing lack of physical activity has helped make this problem a weighty issue.

There is good news. You can start to do something to put physical activity back into your day as you begin to live a healthy lifestyle. You can start with something as simple as a walk around the block.

If you are looking for the gold standard of exercises walking is it. It uses nearly 200 muscles, it is safe, inexpensive and it is a fun activity that just about anyone can do.

The benefits of walking include:

* Helps you lose weight and keep the weight off
* Increases your energy level
* It is a great time to be with a companion or to be alone - your choice
* Reduce your level of stress
* Increases your cardio fitness
* Enables you to maintain your current weight
* Reduces your risk of developing serious health problems
* Allows you the opportunity to achieve a more restful sleep
* Tones your muscles
* Makes you feel great!

Tips To Get Started

Going from doing nothing to starting a walking regime can feel overwhelming. It does not need to be so if you start with some simple techniques. While they may appear basic remember that most folks simply do not participate in any of the following suggestions.

When safe and available use the stairs versus the elevator or escalator. Walking and stair climbing, a fantastic combination.

Take a walk during your lunch hour.

Make your dog happy - take Fido for a walk. No dog? Walk the neighbors dog. You’ll both benefit.

Don’t grab the best space in the parking lot, grab the one farthest from the door then walk. A side benefit of this strategy is less door dings as you will likely have plenty of room to park!

Incorporate a walk into a business discussion. Fresh air may inspire fresh ideas.

March around the room while on the phone, or a least pace.

Walk in place while you are watching TV.

Eat a healthy dinner and then skip the couch. Head out the door for a walk.

Are you a bus or subway commuter? Get off one stop early and walk the rest of the way.

Great family activity: plan a hike or physical outdoor games with your family.

Walk to consult with colleagues in the office versus calling or email.

So plan a walking schedule that includes 30-60 minutes of movement per day to achieve health benefits. Set goals, write those goals down and get moving. Start walking slowly with a 3-5 minute warm-up and then build speed and distance as you feel more comfortable. End each walking session with a 2-3 minute cool-down of slow walking. This cool down allows for your heart rate and blood pressure to gradually return to normal. After your walk is a great time to do some light stretching.

Always check with your doctor before any new physical activity program.

Get moving America - there’s no better day to start than today!

Good Positive Parenting Tip

1 Star2 Stars3 Stars4 Stars5 Stars (No Ratings Yet)
Loading ... Loading ...

I always try new techniques in trying to be a good parent. In trying to stay with my positive parenting methods, I have been using a reward for good behavior. I recently bought two “Ben 10” action figures and showed them to my 6 year old son. I did not give them too him, I only showed it to him. I told him, that if he is good, I will give it to him. That meant he had to listen, help Mom and Dad, eat his food, etc… After a day or two of him being good, I gave him the first one.

I kept the second, the one he wanted most, for later. The second would be a bit more difficult for him to acquire. He has year end tests coming up next week, so I gave him a test of my own; Math. I told him if he gets them all correct I would give him the second toy. Long story short, he did not do that good. I was disappointed, and so was he when I told him that I would not give him the toy because he did not do well on the test. He began to cry.

I guess that doesn’t really seem like positive parenting, but I think it is. More importantly I think it is reality. I took the opportunity to explain to him that in life, if you work hard, and you do good, you will have toys. But if you do not do good, and make too many mistakes you will have no toys. I think this is a simple explanation, and a true one, that he is closely feeling the reality of.

And with the pain being minimal, but allowing him to learn an important lesson in life, I think that shows that it is positive parenting. It was hard not to give him the toy when I saw him crying, but had I given it to him after he did bad on the test, I feel I would have not taught him anything. So maybe if he does well on his test review tomorrow, I will give him the toy then. We will see….

Good Parenting is Positive Parenting

I think one of the hardest things to do as a parent, is to get your children to listen. You can always tell your kids to “be good,” which works, sometimes. But really, how do you get them to listen ? And I guess by that I mean, how do you get them to care?

Punishment obviously works. I think taking away privileges works well. Not letting my 6 year old son watch cartoons, works really well. He will do anything to watch cartoons, even math.

Honestly though, I hate always being the bad guy. For a while, punishment, intimidation and other negative parenting were my best ways of keeping him “good.” But as I found out, and can really see as I write this, that it was effecting our Father/Son relationship.

Recently, I have taken a new approach; Positive Parenting. I have been sitting down with him, and talking to him about his dreams. “What do you want to be when you grow up ?” I wanted to be Superman. He wants to be a Power Ranger. Similar goals I guess. And after he told me this, I talked to him about being a Power Ranger. I continue to talk to him about being a Power Ranger.

I use being a Power Ranger as a destination and try to talk to my son about the road that will lead him there. At 5 years old, I think the reality of these fictional characters is not in question. So if he wants to be a Superhero, than I tell him I will help him be one. I am positive about it.

I ask him what he thinks it means to be a Hero. I talk to him about what I think it means to be a Hero. Whenever he does something I don’t think he should do, or if he is not being “good” I break out the Hero card. “Do you think a Power Ranger would do that.” “If you want to be a Power Ranger, you can’t do that (or you need to do this).”

I don’t think he really understands exactly what I am saying, or the whole concept of future, but I hope that it will plants positive seeds in his 6 year old brain.
